0. Background

0.1 Why write?

As early as December last year, when ChatGPT first came out, I wanted to write about some of my practical use cases. However, since there were many similar articles at that time and I wasn't familiar with it, I didn't write. Later, during the Spring Festival period, I wrote a brief summary, but it was limited to usage.

Why do I want to write? The main reason is that I believe sharing is the best way to learn. There's no doubt that this is the biggest trend going forward, and I have a great passion for ChatGPT, so I should express my thoughts and ideas.

Why write now? There are two triggers. First, at the end of March, while assisting my grandfather in experiencing ChatGPT, I suddenly realized that despite its popularity, very few people in mainland China can genuinely experience it. As one of the few, in addition to my thoughts, I should introduce it in a more systematic way according to my style, which is valuable for both me and potential readers. Even if there are no readers at all, reading this article years later would be a trace I left in this trend. Second, I had a vacation and went on a trip. 1.2 My experience using ChatGPT

I first learned about GPT-3 in 2021 through the Avocado Toast Podcast. I was excited at the time, but it still felt far from being widely adopted (if it weren't for OpenAI's temporary release of ChatGPT, widespread use might have taken several more years).

In late November 2022, ChatGPT was quietly released amid major policy adjustments in mainland China regarding the pandemic.

On December 2, 2022, a Friday, I was still working from home. That evening, I saw shares on my Twitter timeline about ChatGPT registration and usage. I initially just wanted to try it out, but after experiencing its natural language understanding and contextual information capabilities, I was truly amazed. Honestly, although I knew it would have a significant impact, I didn't expect it to come so quickly and progress so rapidly.

From February to March 2023, news about Microsoft's $10 billion investment in OpenAI, OpenAI API's price reduction, GPT-4's release, and the launch of Microsoft 365 Copilot, along with media and KOL promotions, has continually fueled its popularity.

1.3 My understanding of ChatGPT

Knowing what ChatGPT is and isn't can help us use it better. Here are some of my insights:

• At its core, it's a tool that uses statistical patterns, combined with trained data, to continually predict results for the next output based on the input.
• It excels at text-related tasks, with its primary ability being text generation.
• It can produce hallucinations, so if you're unaware of the background information of the question, it's best to maintain a skeptical attitude or simply not ask.
• Even though GPT-4 has logical reasoning abilities, it's not intelligent and doesn't genuinely understand input content, even for simple calculations like 1+1.
• More than 92% of the training materials are in English, so using English prompts generally yields better results than Chinese ones. However, the gap isn't as noticeable with GPT-4.
• If the answer isn't as expected, it's likely because the prompt wasn't well-written. Start by identifying issues with your input.
• It can't access the internet, and its content is limited to information before 2021. However, this has changed since the official release of the ChatGPT plugin.

2. Common scenarios where I use ChatGPT

In general, I use ChatGPT almost every day, both in work and life. Here are some common scenarios and prompts where I use ChatGPT. I hope this can serve as a starting point for you.

Before diving into the details, let me briefly explain my current understanding of the basic principles of writing prompts (in fact, the whole process is like writing product requirement documents):

• Describe the background: ChatGPT doesn't know the context of your input, so it's best to explain the cause and effect of the situation.
• Define objectives and key results: Let ChatGPT know what it needs to do for you and what specific content you need it to output. As Naval puts it, be clear and accurate.
• Break down tasks: Don't expect ChatGPT to complete all tasks at once, but break down larger tasks and tackle them one by one. For larger tasks, you can try adding prompts like "Let's think step by step."

2.1 Work-related scenarios

2.1.1 Copywriting optimization

Firstly, I use ChatGPT as a "Chinese copywriting optimization expert." My writing skills have never been strong, and I follow the principle of at least explaining things clearly. In the past, my colleagues complained that my words were convoluted or unclear, and my basic writing skills needed improvement. However, since using ChatGPT last year, I have it optimize any words that I think needs improvement, and I only release it when I'm satisfied with the result. When using ChatGPT, provide as much background information as possible and break down tasks to avoid having it complete everything at once.

Next, ChatGPT can be used for product research. Currently, I ask ChatGPT about almost all technology-related requirements. The advantage of doing this is that it allows me to consider the feasibility of implementing the requirements beforehand, saving time that developers would otherwise spend on research.

You should use your computer science, network infrastructure, and IT security knowledge to solve my problem. In order to obtain first-hand information at work, we often listen to customer service calls to hear how they handle issues. In the past, for relatively simple data requirements, I would modify existing reports or query data by writing SQL on my own. When encountering errors, I had to solve them myself or seek help from developers. With ChatGPT's help, I only need to get the relevant tables from the developers and tell ChatGPT about the desired output, the fields involved in each table, the relationships between tables, and the filtering conditions. Once I accurately describe these, I can directly copy the code generated by ChatGPT for querying (GPT-4 is usually successful in one go if the relationships are clearly described). Even if there are errors, ChatGPT can help solve them when provided with the error message. ChatGPT can also help process raw data.

Of course, you can also ask ChatGPT to write code for developers to refer to.

ChatGPT excels at writing, but due to the coupling of multiple systems and compatibility issues involved in product requirement documents, it does not perform well with specific plans (including weekly reports). However, for more abstract and macro documents, ChatGPT is highly capable. For example, when writing about corporate values in a performance review document, after telling ChatGPT the corresponding values and examples you have in mind, a well-written document is generated. There are several other scenarios in this direction, which I will not elaborate on.

2.2 Scenarios in daily life

2.2.1 English assistant

In daily life, ChatGPT has been of great help to me, especially in English. It has provided tremendous assistance in translation, explaining long and difficult sentences, rewriting, IELTS essay correction, English email replies, and generating English consultation content, among other tasks.
