Have the main AI tools I use changed in the past 5 months?
Yes, dramatically! They've evolved from simple web-based chatbots to command-line interface (CLI) tools like Claude Code, Codex CLI, and the Gemini CLI, which are the most valuable tools of 2025.
What we can achieve now is far more powerful than anything in the first half of 2025!
What CLI tools unlock:
- Direct local file access without uploading
- Multi-hour workflows with automatic context management
- Running multiple AI models simultaneously for cross-validation
This isn't just for coding. I'm using these tools to streamline complex non-coding work as well. I just updated my page on "How I Use AI Tools Personally" with real-world examples, including:
✓ Analyzing 1,000+ research papers with custom screening tools
✓ Generating 16:9 slide decks from documents in minutes
✓ Creating diagrams without opening design software
✓ Building functional prototypes without knowing how to code

I believe 99%+ of people in Ottawa (and even across Canada) haven't explored these new capabilities yet.
Yesterday, I gave a speech about "How I Use AI Personally" at Carleton University to inspire undergraduate students to explore what they can build with AI. Thanks to Technology Innovation Management (TIM) at Carleton University, Dan Premachuk, and Tara-Lee Raycraft.
I walked through my evolution from web-based chatbots to CLI tools, and demonstrated live how I use CLI tools to extract evidence for my research. (I also played my "Traveled The Anime Multiverse Using Sora 2!" video 🤣 )
While tools are rapidly developing, the fundamental principle remains unchanged: the most practical way to use AI is to allow it to help you accomplish real work in new ways.
Three key thoughts I shared:
1. The traditional career pathway is fading. Even today, what a "job" means is fundamentally different than before. It's time to explore new, unconventional paths forward.
2. Build things to demonstrate your skills. The most effective way to showcase your abilities isn't through certificates, courses, or resumes, it's by building real things. We're in a golden age for builders to create for themselves!
3. High-agency people will thrive. Those who take initiative and build things independently, without waiting for permission or instructions, will create the most value.
As for me? I'm building my own projects and seeing what happens. Even if they don't all succeed (it's normal), I'm gaining invaluable hands-on experience that makes me more valuable to any future employer or partners, or to myself as a founder.
